Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Kinesin-like protein Kif23, Arf6-interacting domain

Cytokinesis is the final stage of cell division, were the cells exhibit drastic morphological changes and remodelling of the cytoskeleton. In anaphase/telophase, an actomyosin contractile ring constricts the plasma membrane in the equatorial region of a dividing cell to form a cleavage furrow, whilst an overlapping region of antiparallel microtubules from the central spindle gradually forms a dense structure in the middle of the intercellular bridge, the so-called Flemming body.

Structural domains comprising this superfamily share the structure of Arf6, a small GTPase which participates in cytokinesis by localizing to the Flemming body (the midbody). Arf6 directly interacts with mitotic kinesin-like protein 1 (MKLP1), a Flemming body-localizing protein essential for cytokinesis. The Arf6-MKLP1 complex plays a crucial role in cytokinesis by connecting the microtubule bundle and membranes at the cleavage plane PMID:22522702.
