Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: (Uracil-5)-methyltransferase, central domain

Post-transcriptional modifications of nucleotides in RNA are present in all kingdoms of life. These occur in many types of RNAs, including tRNA, rRNA, mRNA, snRNA, snoRNA, and tmRNA. A common modification found in RNA is the substitution of 5-methyluridine (m5U) for uridine. This modification is catalysed by S-adenosylmethionine (SAM)-dependent m5U methyltransferases (MTases). The MTase is divided into three different domains: the N-terminal, catalytic and central domains. This entry represents the central domain which is made up of a six-stranded beta-sheet combined with three alpha-helices. It contains an iron-sulphur cluster PMID:15016356 .
