Superfamily: PPE superfamily

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infects nearly a third of the global population and two mysterious protein families, called Pro-Glu motif-containing (PE) and Pro-Pro-Glu motif-containing (PPE) proteins, are highly expanded in Mtb and have been linked to virulence, but their function remains unknown. Proteins belonging to either of these families are exported to the bacterial surface via type VII secretion systems known as ESX. Because the PE and PPE genes are prevalent in Mtb, and absent in humans, they may serve as potential targets for the development of anti-tuberculosis intervention strategies. The function of most of these proteins remains unknown PMID:25275011,PMID:25155747,PMID:19602151.
