The name of this superfamily has been modified since the most recent official CATH+ release (v4_2_0). At the point of the last release, this superfamily was named:

Translation, Eukaryotic Peptide Chain Release Factor Subunit 1; Chain A, domain 1

Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: eRF1 domain 1

Structural domains which comprise this superfamily share the structure of a conserved region in the release factor eRF1, designated domain 1. eRF1 is involved in termination of protein biosynthesis through stop codon recognition at the A site of the ribosome and stimulation of peptidyl-tRNA bond hydrolysis at the peptidyl transferase centre PMID:10676813. The overall shape and dimensions of eRF1 resemble a tRNA molecule with domains 1, 2, and 3 of eRF1 corresponding to the anticodon loop, aminoacyl acceptor stem, and T stem of a tRNA molecule, respectively. A conserved groove on domain 1, 80 angstroms from the GGQ motif, is proposed to form the codon recognition site PMID:10676813
