Superfamily: Ribosomal protein S11/S14

This superfamily entry represents the ribosomal protein S11, located on the large lobe of the small ribosomal subunit. This entry includes bacterial S11 and its homologues in bacterial, archaeal and eukaryotic ribosomes (it is known as S14 in eukaryotes).

S11 has a distinctive protein architecture comprised of five beta sheets packed against two alpha helices, resembling the RRM RNA binding motif. Interestingly, S11 does not use the side of the beta sheet to contact RNA, as most RRM-containing proteins do, but uses the flat side of the antiparallel part of the beta sheet for its RNA interactions. Further contacts between S11 and rRNA are established via the 17 amino acid residue C-terminal tail of S11.

S11 plays an essential role in selecting the correct tRNA in protein biosynthesis. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, rpS14 is an essential protein necessary for the assembly of 40 S ribosomal subunits.
