The name of this superfamily has been modified since the most recent official CATH+ release (v4_3_0). At the point of the last release, this superfamily was named:

"
Peptidase U40
".

Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Peptidase U40

According to the literature, members of the structural domains which comprise this superfamily correspond to the structure of P5 murein endopeptidase from bacteriophage phi-6, which explains why members of this superfamily are mainly found in viruses. Then name assigned by this superfamily in both Pfam (PFAM:PF10464) and InterPro (INTERPRO:IPR019505) is peptidase U40 and thus this has been chosen to assign this superfamily.

This function of this structural domain involves the lysis of the cell wall in several Gram-negative bacteria.
