Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Tetrapyrrole methylase, C-terminal domain

This superfamily entry represents the C-terminal subdomain from several tetrapyrrole methylases. Tetrapyrroles are large macrocyclic compounds derived from a common biosynthetic pathway PMID:11215515. Tetrapyrrole methylases catalyse the methylation of cyclic tetrapyrrole rings using methyl groups derived from S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) for the biosynthesis of modified tetrapyrroles such as cobalamin (vitamin B12), haem, sirohaem, chlorophyll, coenzyme F430 and phytochromobilin PMID:17227226. Enzymes in this superfamily include: S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent uroporphyrinogen III methyltransferase (SUMT) PMID:15522295, precorrin-2 C20-methyltransferase CobI/CbiL PMID:17229157, precorrin-4 C11-methyltransferase CobM/CbiF PMID:16866557, sirohaem synthase CysG PMID:14595395 and diphthine synthase PMID:18391406.
