Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Colicin E5 C-terminal ribonuclease domain (CRD)

Colicins are defensive weapons produced by some Escherichia coli in order to survive under nutrition-deficient conditions. Colicin classification is based on the type of the receptor that it binds for cell entry. The E group of colicins bind to the vitamin B12 receptor (BtuB) and are nucleases (with one exception, E1, which is a pore-forming toxin) PMID:16524591. Colicin E5 is a ribonuclease, but it lacks sequence homology with other E group members. Its activity resides within its C-terminal ribonuclease domain (E5-CRD), and this domain is responsible for its substrate specificity PMID:17099236. This entry represents E5-CRD which is composed of two alpha-helices and a five-stranded beta-sheet PMID:16060658.
