Structural domains comprising this superfamily share the structure of the heavy-metal resistance protein CzcE, a small periplasmic metal-binding protein reported to be specific for copper ions. It is believed that CzcE acts both as a Cu(I) and Cu(II) sensor and mediator of the multiple cross-responses of C. metallidurans CH34 against heavy metals by linking copper and cobalt-zinc-cadmium resistance PMID:20112954.
