Functional Families
Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.
Superfamily: Ribosomal protein S27
This superfamily includes the a zinc-binding domain found in the ribosomal protein S27 from the small (30S) subunit of the ribosome. Structurally it is a beta-sandwich, composed of two three-stranded sheets. The human S27 has an N-terminal extension relative to the archaeal S27. This a novel fold due to the uniqueness of the strands arrangement. Highly conserved residues forming a hydrophobic patch are supposed to have a functional importance. S27 is involved in rRNa processing, direct binding to mRNA and degradation of damaged mRNAs. S27 is a C4 zinc finger protein of the CX2CX14-16CX2C class. Zinc finger motifs in ribosomal proteins mediate protein-RNA interactions, however it has been suggested the zinc finger in S27 possibly has no functional importance for modern S27 proteins, and is rather a fossil from ancient evolution. This view is supported by the sequence alignment, showing that the zinc finger motif is not strictly conserved.
