Erythrocyte binding antigen 175 region VI
".

Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Erythrocyte binding antigen 175 region VI

Structural domains which comprise this superfamily correspond to the structure of the highly conserved region VI of the erythrocyte-binding antigen 175 (EBA-175) of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. EBA-175 belongs to erythrocyte-binding protein family involved in the formation of a tight junction, a necessary step in invasion of erythrocytes, a step required for replication and proliferation of the parasite in the bloodstream of its vertebrate host. Region VI is a cysteine-rich domain essential for EBA-175 trafficking. PMID:18036613
