Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: FACT complex subunit Spt16p/Cdc68p

Facilitates chromatin transcription (FACT) is a conserved histone chaperone that reorganizes nucleosomes and ensures chromatin integrity during DNA transcription, replication and repair. To carry out its broad functions FACT needs to be able to recognise histones H2A-H2B. Structural domains comprising this superfamily share the structure of subunit Spt16M of the FACT complex. Spt16M makes several interactions with histones, gradually blocking the strongest interaction of H2B with DNA. This process is often referred to as 'nucleosome breathing' based on the re-organization of the first 30 base pairs of nucleosomal histone-DNA contacts PMID:23698368.
