Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Phenylacetic acid degradation B

Phenylacetyl-CoA monooxygenase (epoxidase) is a multicomponent enzyme, PaaABC(D)E, responsible for the hydroxylation of phenylacetate-CoA (PA-CoA), the second catabolic step in phenylacetic acid (PA) degradation PMID:9600981,PMID:9748275,PMID:21247899. In addition to catalysing this reaction which transforms phenylacetyl-CoA into its ring-1,2-epoxide, itmediates the NADPH-dependent removal of the epoxide oxygen, process which regenerates phenylacetyl-CoA with formation of water PMID:22398448.

Structural domains comprising this superfamily share the structure of the PaaB subunit, which is thought to act as an effector protein PMID:20660314.
